The project originally known as the Shelby Rail Trail, is part of the Cleveland County Rail Trail Implementation Master Plan which envisions a safe off-street rail trail for cyclists and pedestrians to use from Shelby, NC to the NC/SC state line. Utilizing a portion of unused rail corridor that runs approximately 10.2 miles from the Sunset Cemetery in Uptown Shelby to the state line, the Shelby corridor runs parallel to South Morgan Street. On this 2.6-mile stretch, there are two major crossings at Dekalb Street and Lafayette Street. TGS provided turn-key design services. Phase I of the trail officially opened in October 2023. The Carolina Harmony Trail is part of the Carolina Thread Trail system.
