This project is significant as it completes one of the two remaining gaps of Corridor K in the Appalachian Development Highway System, while also positively impacting commercial travel through the state of North Carolina. US 129, NC 143, and NC 28 are now part of the National Highway System and will serve as a detour for US 74 and US 129. It involves increasing shoulder widths and adding passing/climbing lanes for the length of the project. The purpose of this project was to provide the transportation infrastructure necessary for the well-being of residents by improving mobility and reliability between the existing four-lane section on NC 28 at Stecoah and US 129 in Robbinsville.
In addition to transportation improvements, the project includes the design and construction of a land bridge to provide safe passage for wildlife and pedestrians on the Appalachian Trail. A section of the AT is being realigned to cross the land bridge. In April 2021, the National Association of Environmental Professionals recognized this Core Team and NCDOT Division 14 for their efforts in planning and design. The NEPA-focused organization awarded Division 14 and the Core Team with the Environmental Excellence Award in Environmental Management, Stewardship, Conservation, and Protection.
